The Picasso museum offers visitors a unique experience. The ten masterpieces presented on the first floor are from one of the most important private collections in the world, the Nahmad collection – nine famous paintings by Pablo Picasso from 1905 to 1971, and a 1954 canvas painted by Mark Rothko, opposite Le Concert by Nicolas de Staël.
Picasso is at home in Antibes: he belongs here as one belongs to a loved one. As for Rothko, he is coming here for the first time, making his great fields of impalpable hues resonate in a duo with the harmonious echo of the last chromatic chords of another virtuoso of color.
Each room features either one single work, or two. Contrary to traditional exhibitions bringing together and associating pieces, what is at stake here is not accumulation but focus, and receiving the object in its singularity for the sake of contemplation and interpretation.
Each room is therefore a setting for one single motive for meditation, or a subtle dialogue between two works, in order to give the visitor’s gaze optimal conditions for actually seeing and understanding the painting, without faltering or having to make a choice.
More than an exhibition, this is an installation in the ever-changing space of the museum galleries, aimed at making for an original encounter between a work and an architecture, a surprising journey in ten stages to share the sheer beauty of these paintings.
