Carmen Souza has become a leading figure in Cape Verdean music, establishing her name on the world music scene. In 2005, with her first album, Ess e Nha Cabo Verde, produced with Théo Pascal, her bassist and producer, she created a new, unclassifiable genre, combining traditional African rhythms, Cape Verdean melodies and contemporary jazz. Often referred to as the Ella Fitzgerald of Cape Verde, Carmen Souza is a pioneer in writing, recording and performing her own brand of world jazz. Her charisma and vocal technique have allowed her to operate far beyond the boundaries of world music and jazz – genres in which she moves with ease and grace.
