Claude Picasso, a life apart

Claude Picasso was born in April 1947, shortly after his parents – the painters Pablo Picasso and Françoise Gilot – had spent time working at the Château Grimaldi in Antibes.
His childhood spent alongside two artists led him too into a world of creativity, and as a young man he chose photography as his own medium. He moved to New York in 1967 at the invitation of Richard Avedon and became the assistant to the great American photographer. A few months later, he opened his own studio in Manhattan and began a career as a professional photographer that would last several years.
This exhibition, and the accompanying book, present for the first time the photographs – portraits, surrealist compositions, commissions for fashion magazines… – by Claude Picasso, a talented photographer of his time, whose images reveal a sensitive perspective on his contemporaries – whether famous artists or anonymous passers-by – and on the landscapes he loved to discover whilst travelling, allowing us to share in his idealised vision of the world and his poetic take on reality.
