Matthieu ASTOUX ‘From engraving to painting, an artist's journey’
-
Matthieu Astoux was born in Antibes. He studied ceramic design and then spent two years at the School of Decorative Arts in Limoges. There he experimented with enamelling and glazing, fascinated by the variety of possible combinations, and devoted himself to colour on this material.
At the same time, he learned engraving techniques at the Atelier du Safranier in Antibes: etching, drypoint, linocut and aquatint. He completed his training with internships at the Villa Thiole in Nice.

At the same time, he learned engraving techniques at the Atelier du Safranier in Antibes: etching, drypoint, linocut and aquatint. He completed his training with internships at the Villa Thiole in Nice.
He then specialised in engraving and set up his studio in Cap d'Antibes.
Initially working with metal (copper, zinc, etc.) using drypoint, he produced etchings and then moved on to engraving on all types of materials, using all types of tools (cutters, etc.) on cardboard, wood and hardboard using carborundum. Everything can be engraved, and he is passionate about exploring this possibility, with inking doing the rest.
Often inked by juxtaposing several plates and different colours, they are printed in small, limited and numbered series.
